Garden Dreams...

It's probably the only thing that keeps me sane during the cold, gray winter days - garden dreams. Somehow, the realities of fighting insects, diseases, and bad weather don't ruin my aspirations for the next growing season. I don't really know why. Maybe because each year is different, with different challenges and victories, so there's really no point in worrying about those things now. Now is the time to dream...and peruse plant catalogs.

This year, I'm dreaming of dahlias in particular as I plan to experiment with more flower varieties for the cutting gardens. We'll still have a vegetable garden (I can't imagine summer without vine-ripened tomatoes for every meal and Shishito peppers for fajitas), but flowers have my attention right now. And I've made two dahlia discoveries - Floret Flower Farm and Swan Island Dahlias. They have made it impossible for me to not want just about every variety they sell (maybe it's the gorgeous flower photos and the fact that, uh, it's gray and cold outside). So yeah, I ordered...a few. I've also purchased a bunch of seeds - sunflowers, black-eyed susans, snapdragons, zinnias, lace flower, amaranth, orach, flowering vines, etc. I'm surrounded by catalogs and seed packets...and I love it!

Soon the challenges of the growing season will be upon us, but for now, let's dream of what might be: waves of colorful flowers for random bouquets of kindness, succulent and crunchy veggies to make mealtimes more delicious, new garden friends to make gardening more precious. The blanket of snow on our rugged Columbia Basin hills is fading now, but there is still time for the imagination to run free...

Happy Gardening,
